What Is a Car Elevator?

A car elevator is a lift built to move a vehicle between floors instead of moving people. The car drives onto the platform, the doors close, and the platform travels to the level you need. The driver can stay in the vehicle or step out first, depending on how the lift is configured.

You will also see the same machine called an elevator for cars, an automotive elevator or an automobile elevator. All of those names describe the same product.

In the UAE, a car elevator usually solves a plot problem. Villa plots in Dubai and Abu Dhabi rarely leave room for a ramp down to basement parking, and a ramp takes up floor area that could be living space or lettable space. A car elevator does the same job inside a shaft roughly the size of the vehicle itself.

EME Elevators supplies, installs and maintains car elevators across the UAE. We have been working in this market for 13 years.

What your villa needs

A car elevator is easiest to fit at design stage, but a retrofit into an existing villa is possible where the garage sits directly above or below the driveway. Send us your drawings and we will tell you honestly whether the layout works.

Car Elevators for Villa and Home Garages

Most of our residential enquiries come from villa owners who want to park below ground or above the ground floor without giving half the plot to a ramp.

The vehicle enters at driveway level. The platform takes it down to the basement garage or up to a parking deck, and the owner walks out into the house through an internal door. There is no ramp, no reversing down a slope and no wasted plot area.

Types of Car Elevators We Install

Hydraulic Car Elevators

A hydraulic power unit drives a piston to raise and lower the platform. Column-type and scissor-type lifts fall in this category. They suit low-rise buildings like villas and underground garages, with a typical capacity of 3,000 to 5,000 kg.

Traction Car Elevators

Steel ropes, pulleys, and counterweights move the cabin, the same principle as a passenger lift. Traction systems run faster and handle mid- to high-rise buildings, with capacity from 3,000 kg up to 10,000 kg — the standard choice for commercial towers and dealerships.

Pneumatic Car Elevators

Air pressure inside a sealed cylinder lifts the platform. No deep pit or large machine room is needed, which makes pneumatic lifts a fit for villas with limited structural room.

Hydraulic Car Elevators

Most car elevators installed in the UAE are hydraulic, and for good reason.

A power unit pushes oil into a cylinder, the piston extends and the platform rises. On the way down, the oil returns under controlled flow, so the descent stays smooth and quiet. Travel speed is typically 0.15 to 0.30 metres per second, slower than a passenger lift and perfectly adequate for a vehicle.

Hydraulic suits

Traction becomes the better option on taller shafts, where travel is long and the lift runs many times a day. We will recommend whichever suits the building rather than whichever is easier to supply.

Car Parking and Storage Lifts

A car elevator and a car parking lift are not the same product, and the difference is worth settling before you budget.

A car elevator moves a vehicle between floors. A parking lift, also called a stacker, puzzle system or car storage lift, holds vehicles on stacked platforms so more cars fit into the same footprint. It moves the car a short distance to store it, not between levels of the building.

Some projects need one, some need both. If your goal is more parking spaces rather than access to another floor, a parking platform is usually the right answer. Our Scissor Lift page covers stacked and double-deck parking platforms.

Car Elevators in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Across the UAE

We install car elevators most often in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and we cover Sharjah, Ajman, Al Ain, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain from the same team.

Every installation is submitted to the relevant Municipality and Civil Defence authority for that emirate, and we handle that submission as part of the job rather than leaving it with the owner.

Capacity, Dimensions & Technical Specs

Capacity Cabin Size (W×D×H) Typical Use
3,000 kg ~2,500 × 5,700 × 2,500 mm Villas, sedans, small SUVs
5,000 kg ~3,400 × 5,700 × 2,500 mm Larger SUVs, mixed-use buildings
Up to 10,000 kg Custom-engineered Commercial towers, dealerships

Nominal speed typically runs 0.2–0.6 m/s, with pit depth from 1,250 mm to 1,800 mm depending on lift type. Exact dimensions are confirmed after a structural site survey.

Basement Car Lifts

A basement car lift is the most common brief we receive from villa owners in Abu Dhabi. The vehicle enters at ground level from the driveway and travels down one or two levels to the parking floor.

Doors, Access & Smart Control

Doors can be configured as center opening, side opening, split opening, or telescoping, depending on vehicle size and how many entry points your building needs. Cabins can have one, two, or opposite-side accesses to match your traffic flow.

Operation is available by pushbutton control, remote control, smart card, or smartphone app, with light barriers to guide vehicle positioning and prevent contact with the doors during entry and exit. For buildings with two stopping points, fully automatic travel starts the moment the vehicle is positioned correctly, no button press needed.

Built-In Safety Features

Electric and Residential Car Lifts

Residential car lift, electric garage car lift and garage lift all describe the same product for a home. Electric refers to the controls and drive system, while the lifting itself is usually hydraulic. When you compare quotes, ask about platform size, duty cycle and cabin finish rather than the name on the brochure.

What a Car Elevator Costs in the UAE

Pricing depends on lift type, capacity, travel height, door configuration, and site conditions. As a guide:

Type Typical Price Range
Hydraulic (villa/residential) AED 75,000 – 185,000
Pneumatic AED 75,000 – 185,000
Traction (mid/high-rise) AED 80,000 – 330,000
Custom / high-capacity AED 85,000 – 550,000+

Pit excavation, structural reinforcement, and Civil Defence approvals typically add 15–25% on top of equipment cost. Retrofitting an existing villa costs more than planning the shaft into a new build from the foundation stage.

Installation & Maintenance

We handle the full process from structural assessment through Civil Defence approval and handover. A residential retrofit usually takes 6 to 10 weeks; new-build installations run alongside construction. After handover, our maintenance plans cover hydraulic seals, cable tension, safety sensors, and emergency systems on a scheduled basis, keeping your elevator compliant and running.

Frequently Asked Questions

A single-car shaft typically needs around 2.8m width by 5.5–6.3m depth, with less required for pneumatic systems that skip the pit.

6 to 10 weeks for a residential retrofit from approval to handover; new builds run in parallel with construction.

Yes. Every installation includes obstruction sensors, overload protection, interlocking doors, and emergency stop systems, built to EN81-20 standards.

Yes, every car elevator needs approval from Dubai Civil Defence or the equivalent authority in your emirate before installation and before handover.

Yes, after a structural assessment confirms the foundation and walls can support a new shaft and pit.

A car elevator is a lift that carries a vehicle between floors. An elevator car is the industry term for the cabin of an ordinary lift, the enclosure that people stand in. The two terms sound similar but describe different things. If you are looking for passenger lift cabins, see our Passenger Lifts page.

EME Elevators supplies, installs and maintains car elevators across all seven emirates. We are a supplier and installer rather than a rental company, and installation and ongoing AMC maintenance can be handled on the same contract.

A single-vehicle platform needs roughly 5.5m x 2.8m plus shaft clearance on all sides, a pit of around 250mm to 400mm and headroom of 2.6m or more if you are lifting SUVs. Send us your garage drawings and we will confirm the figures against your actual plot.

Site installation usually runs two to four weeks once the shaft is ready and the unit has arrived. Manufacturing and shipping lead time sits on top of that and depends on platform size, capacity and finish.
