WHAT IS A HOSPITAL LIFT?
“Hospital lift” means two different pieces of equipment, and mixing them up during procurement wastes time.
A traditional hospital lift needs a machine room, usually on the roof, to house the drive unit and controller. It is easy to service, it takes heat away from the shaft, and for very high capacity or very high traffic lifts it is still the right answer. What it costs you is floor area, and in a hospital that area is clinical space.
A machine room less hospital lift, often shortened to MRL, puts the gearless drive inside the shaft itself, normally in the headroom above the cabin. Nothing sits on the roof. The permanent magnet motors used in these systems draw less power than an equivalent geared unit and give off less heat, so the shaft needs lighter ventilation.
MRL suits new hospital towers where the architect wants the roof for plant equipment, and clinic retrofits where there is simply nowhere to put a machine room. The trade-off is service access: maintenance is carried out from the top landing rather than a walk-in room, so the lift needs a maintenance team set up for it. EME Elevators covers both configurations under the same contract.
TYPES OF HOSPITAL ELEVATORS WE INSTALL
Not every floor of a hospital needs the same lift. A theatre floor moves beds and anaesthetic equipment, a pharmacy floor moves stock trolleys, and an outpatient wing moves people. We specify each shaft against what actually travels through it, then match the drive system to the height of the building.
Fluid-driven pistons instead of cables. A gentler, low-vibration ride for critical or post-surgical patients. Best suited to low and mid-rise buildings.
Steel rope and motorised sheave system. Faster travel for taller hospital towers with heavy daily floor traffic.
Sometimes called an air lift, this vacuum-driven system needs no shaft pit or machine room. Useful for retrofits in existing hospital buildings with limited construction space.
Move sterile supplies, pharmacy stock and food trolleys away from patient traffic, protecting infection control zones.
Hospital lift size is driven by what the cabin has to carry, not by a single industry standard. A cabin sized for a bed alone is not a cabin sized for a bed plus an IV stand, a monitor trolley and two attending staff. Below are the capacity classes most commonly specified for hospitals and clinics in the UAE.
| Capacity | Typical Cabin (W x D) | Door Width | Typically Specified For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,600 kg | 1,500 x 2,400 mm | 1,300 mm | Clinics, day surgery, small private hospitals |
| 2,000 kg | 1,800 x 2,700 mm | 1,300 mm | General wards, standard bed and stretcher lift |
| 2,500 kg | 2,000 x 2,900 mm | 1,400 mm | ICU, theatre and emergency floors |
| 3,000 kg and above | Custom | 1,400 mm and above | Trauma centres, imaging equipment transfer |
Cabin ceiling height should be at least 2,300 mm so IV poles and overhead monitors clear the roof. Shaft width normally needs 400 to 500 mm more than the cabin on each dimension, and that is the figure most often missed at design stage.
A hospital stretcher lift in the 2,000 kg class lets a trolley, a nurse and equipment travel together without the bed touching the cabin walls. EME Elevators measures each facility’s corridor and doorway layout before confirming the final hospital bed lift size, so the lift fits the building rather than the building working around the lift.
Figures shown are typical specifications. Final dimensions are confirmed against the model selected and the site survey.
HOW A HOSPITAL LIFT WORKS
The lifting mechanism depends on which system is installed.
Hydraulic systems push the cabin upward using a fluid-filled cylinder beneath the shaft. This gives a controlled, low-vibration ride, ideal for patients on ventilators or IV lines.
Traction systems use steel ropes over a motorised sheave at the top of the shaft, allowing faster travel across taller buildings.
How staff use a hospital lift: a key-locked priority mode lets emergency staff override waiting calls and send the cabin directly to surgery, ICU or the emergency floor without stopping en route.
A hospital bed lift is built deep and wide enough to take a full bed with the patient flat, plus an attending nurse and a monitor trolley, without anyone being repositioned mid-transfer. Custom cabin sizing is normal here rather than exceptional, because ward corridors and lift lobbies differ from building to building. We size the cabin to the route the bed actually takes.

What We Install
Abu Dhabi’s hospital construction runs to a different rhythm from the rest of the UAE. Government health projects, private medical towers and clinic fit-outs all sit under Department of Municipalities and Transport approval, and the documentation expected at submission stage is heavier than in most emirates. Passenger and goods lifts also fall under biannual third-party inspection, which shapes how a maintenance schedule has to be written.
EME Elevators supplies and installs hospital bed lifts, stretcher elevators and goods lifts across Abu Dhabi city, Al Reem Island, Khalifa City, Mussafah, Al Ain and the Western Region. We handle the shaft survey, the equipment specification and the approval documentation as one scope, then hold the maintenance contract afterwards.
Whether it is a new hospital tower or a bed lift replacement in a running facility, the site assessment is free and the written quote follows within 48 hours.
EME Elevators installs and services hospital lifts in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah.
New hospital tower, clinic retrofit, or private medical centre, one team handles elevator installation plus ongoing elevator maintenance under a single contract.
Our elevator solutions for hospitals in Abu Dhabi cover supply, installation and maintenance of hospital bed lifts, stretcher elevators and goods lifts across Abu Dhabi city, Al Reem Island, Khalifa City, Mussafah, Al Ain and the Western Region.
Installing a lift in a working hospital is not the same job as installing one in an empty tower. Ward access, infection control zones and noise windows all shape the schedule. Our process is built around keeping the facility running.
We measure the shaft, the corridor turning radius and the landing door openings, and confirm what the building can physically take before anything is specified.
Capacity class, drive system, cabin finish and control mode are agreed in writing with a fixed scope. The quote follows within 48 hours of the site visit.
Drawings and equipment documentation are prepared for the municipality and civil defence submissions in the emirate where the project sits.
Shaft preparation, guide rail alignment, cabin assembly, drive installation and control wiring, followed by load testing and safety gear testing before handover.
Staff are briefed on priority mode and emergency release, documentation is handed over, and the lift moves onto a scheduled maintenance contract.
Hospitals usually approach a hospital lift supplier at one of two points: at design stage, when the shaft is still on paper and the specification is open, or years later, when an existing lift is failing and the facility needs it replaced without closing a ward.
EME Elevators works at both points. We supply and install hospital lift systems and we hold the maintenance contract afterwards, which means one accountable team rather than a supplier who hands the building over and disappears. Thirteen years of work across the UAE sits behind that.
For procurement teams comparing suppliers, the questions worth asking are the same every time: who carries out the maintenance after handover, how quickly can a breakdown be attended, are spare parts held locally, and is the team set up to service the specific drive system being quoted. We answer all four in writing before a contract is signed.

No. A Hoyer Lift is a portable patient transfer device for one patient in one room. A hospital lift, as EME Elevators builds it, is a structural elevator that moves beds and staff between floors.
It refers to a pneumatic vacuum elevator, a shaft-pit-free lift system. It suits hospital retrofits with limited construction space.
No. A lift chair is a reclining medical chair, not an elevator. EME Elevators does not supply lift chairs.
Around 8 ft deep by 5.2 ft wide, though EME Elevators customises this to each building's layout.
Hydraulic suits low to mid-rise buildings with a smoother ride. Traction suits taller towers needing speed. Pneumatic suits retrofits with limited shaft space.
Yes, all 7 emirates, from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah.
It is a hospital lift with the drive unit mounted inside the shaft instead of a separate machine room. It frees up roof or floor space, which is why it is often specified for new hospital towers and for clinic retrofits with no room for a machine room.
Most UAE hospital lifts fall between 1,600 kg and 2,500 kg. A 2,000 kg cabin at roughly 1,800 x 2,700 mm covers general ward use. EME Elevators customises this to each building's layout.
A hospital lift has a deeper cabin so a bed can enter without being tilted, a wider door, a higher capacity, and priority control that lets emergency staff override waiting calls. A passenger lift has none of these.
Yes. We install and maintain hospital bed lifts and stretcher elevators across Abu Dhabi, including Al Reem Island, Khalifa City, Mussafah and Al Ain, and we prepare the DMT approval documentation as part of the scope.
It depends on shaft readiness, floor count and approvals. We give a dated schedule with the written quote after the site survey rather than a general estimate.
Approvals sit with the municipality and civil defence in the emirate where the building is located, and with the Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi. We prepare and submit the required documentation as part of the installation.
