WHAT IS A HOSPITAL LIFT?
“Hospital lift” means two different pieces of equipment, and mixing them up during procurement wastes time.
Type 01
These are portable devices that move one patient at a time, from a bed to a chair or into a bath. A Hoyer Lift is the best known example. This category includes four main types:
These are patient care equipment, regulated under FDA guidance on patient lift devices. EME Elevators does not manufacture or install these.
Type 02
These are structural lifts built into the hospital itself. Extra-deep, extra-wide cabins carry a full bed, a stretcher, monitoring equipment and attending staff between floors. They run on priority control modes, hold a smooth leveling stop for trauma patients, and switch to emergency power backup automatically if the building loses electricity.
TYPES OF HOSPITAL ELEVATORS WE INSTALL
Deep, wide cabins sized for a full hospital bed plus staff, without repositioning the patient mid-transfer.
Fluid-driven pistons instead of cables. A gentler, low-vibration ride for critical or post-surgical patients. Best suited to low and mid-rise buildings.
Steel rope and motorised sheave system. Faster travel for taller hospital towers with heavy daily floor traffic.
Sometimes called an air lift, this vacuum-driven system needs no shaft pit or machine room. Useful for retrofits in existing hospital buildings with limited construction space.
Move sterile supplies, pharmacy stock and food trolleys away from patient traffic, protecting infection control zones.
Hospital lift size depends on what the cabin carries, not a fixed industry number.
| Measurement | Standard Range |
|---|---|
| Cabin depth | ~8 ft (2.4m) |
| Cabin width | ~5.2 ft (1.6m) |
| Ceiling clearance | 7.5 ft+ (2.3m) for IV poles and monitors |
| Door width | Wide enough for angled bed entry |
| Weight capacity | From 1,600 kg upward |
A hospital stretcher lift size this large lets a trolley, an attending nurse and equipment fit without the bed touching the cabin walls. EME Elevators measures each facility’s corridor and doorway layout before confirming final hospital bed lift size, so the lift fits the building, not the other way round.
HOW A HOSPITAL LIFT WORKS
The lifting mechanism depends on which system is installed.
Hydraulic systems push the cabin upward using a fluid-filled cylinder beneath the shaft. This gives a controlled, low-vibration ride, ideal for patients on ventilators or IV lines.
Traction systems use steel ropes over a motorised sheave at the top of the shaft, allowing faster travel across taller buildings.
How staff use a hospital lift: a key-locked priority mode lets emergency staff override waiting calls and send the cabin directly to surgery, ICU or the emergency floor without stopping en route.
Every hospital building is different, so EME Elevators provides a written quote after a site visit rather than a fixed online price.

No. A Hoyer Lift is a portable patient transfer device for one patient in one room. A hospital lift, as EME Elevators builds it, is a structural elevator that moves beds and staff between floors.
It refers to a pneumatic vacuum elevator, a shaft-pit-free lift system. It suits hospital retrofits with limited construction space.
No. A lift chair is a reclining medical chair, not an elevator. EME Elevators does not supply lift chairs.
Around 8 ft deep by 5.2 ft wide, though EME Elevators customises this to each building's layout.
Hydraulic suits low to mid-rise buildings with a smoother ride. Traction suits taller towers needing speed. Pneumatic suits retrofits with limited shaft space.
